Movies have a rating system to help guide the consumer weed out adult/violent/inappropriate kinds of films. Video games do, too. Do you think BOOKS should have a ratings system?
Hmm... sure. I wouldn't mind it, though isn't that what genres are for? They usually classify which age group is appropriate, but don't exactly mention if there's any violent or innappropriate stuff. It does separate adult, teen, and children's books.
It would be helpful to have a ratings system for books. At least then myself, and many others (especially younger ones) are fully warned before getting/buying a certain book and then tossing it to the side, "fuming" internally because it was inappropriate and we lost about $20 or more when we can't even read it. Or in other cases, stressing out (okay, I won't stress out much, but someone else in the house certainly will! In fact, I might hear another week long lecture for good measure).
