Review: Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Lux #1
Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Released Date: November 23, 2011
Publisher: Entangled Publishing

Starting over sucks.

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I'd pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring.... until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.

And then he opened his mouth.

Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something...unexpected happens.

The hot alien living next door marks me.

You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon's touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I'm getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.

If I don't kill him first, that is.

I've been procrastinating. And pushing Obsidian off for months on end. Until now, that is.
(Actually, back in late October. The review just got posted late... because of blog posting schedule.)
For a first-timer reading one of Armentrout's books, Obsidian wasn't terrible. It wasn't bad, but it didn't exactly land on my favorite books list, if I even have a list.
Did it land in a memorial place in my mind?
     Yep. Right... next to Twilight.

The Sunday Post ~ 30

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer - It's a chance to share news - A post to recap the past week on your blog, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead.
Thanksgiving Break. One of the best things EVER invented.
Okay, it's not because I have a lot of people to thank, though that may be the case (then again, my family doesn't celebrate Thanksgiving). It's because I can finally catch up on reading since I've been falling behind for the last couple of weeks.
Required reads does that to you. O_o
Oh, and Finals month (boo...)! In other words, this week is the LAST week to send in any review requests. Other requests, including advanced review requests (have to be after December though), are still welcome (no, advanced doesn't exactly mean ARCs). :3

The Iron Fey: Call of the Forgotten #2
Author: Julie Kagawa
Released Date: October 29, 2013
Publisher: Harlequin Teen

In the real world, when you vanish into thin air for a week, people tend to notice.

After his unexpected journey into the lands of the fey, Ethan Chase just wants to get back to normal. Well, as "normal" as you can be when you see faeries every day of your life. Suddenly the former loner with the bad reputation has someone to try for-his girlfriend, Kenzie. Never mind that he's forbidden to see her again.

But when your name is Ethan Chase and your sister is one of the most powerful faeries in the Nevernever, "normal" simply isn't to be. For Ethan's nephew, Keirran, is missing, and may be on the verge of doing something unthinkable in the name of saving his own love. Something that will fracture the human and faery worlds forever, and give rise to the dangerous fey known as the Forgotten. As Ethan's and Keirran's fates entwine and Keirran slips further into darkness, Ethan's next choice may decide the fate of them all.

Before Reading:
I thought I had to wait an additional 3 weeks maximum to get my hands on the county library's ebook copy of The Iron Traitor.
But then a genie decided to grant my wish – or was it because there were more holds on it? – and the county library bought a second copy, much to my enthusiasm and glee that I wouldn't have to wait for about 3 weeks (all I'm going to respond to your envy, L, is to go put yourself on the hold list before it gets bigger or buy a copy. Sorry! Dx).

Well, nothing much this past week for me; it was sort of... average. The usual week.
     Although... there was one thing.
Snow. It snowed! :D But it didn't snow. :(
In explanation, it actually did snow, but there was only a super thin layer of cold fluffiness on cars and roofs.
I don't think that really counts as snow. :p

For the Ambrose family, it’s a sign that their quiet lives are about to be changed forever. The events signal the beginning of a struggle that will either push them closer together as a family, or tear them apart. To survive, each of the children must harness the strange new abilities with which they’ve been gifted and learn to fight as one. For Jeremiah Ambrose, the struggle to protect his children will force him to put aside his animosity for his brother-in-law Harper, and learn to see him in a different light.

But for Harper, the burden is heaviest. He alone knows the truth about the strange events and what they mean for his family. Something is searching for the Ambrose children. And when it finds them, the fate of the whole world will be decided…

Disclaimer: Review copy provided by author for review

Let me blunt about The Ambrose Beacon: it was boring. It also became the third unfortunate book that lands into my DNF list and the first fantasy book – oh wait. Not exactly the first... does the Caster Chronicles count as Fantasy, or does it count as Paranormal? If it counts as paranormal, then The Ambrose Beacon became the unfortunate first fantasy book I didn't finish.
So essentially, I give fair warning: I rated and reviewed it based on what I could manage to read so far. Which, I think I was being a bit lenient about, but I didn't throw the book against the wall, so it certainly didn't deserve a lower rating.
Now allow me to tell why I found it boring, and my general thoughts on it:

Book Blast + Giveaway: Illuminating Gracie by Lisa C. Temple

Title: Illuminating Gracie
Author: Lisa C. Temple

As an old woman’s lifeless body lies on a cold stone floor, her soul stands before an angel who offers her a miraculous opportunity: the chance to do it all again. But that is easier said than done. In order to change the path her life has taken, she must put aside years of self-loathing and pain, so she can help the young girl she once was become the woman she should have been.

At 17 years old, Grace Bennett is a bitter young woman. Though blessed with a loving family, looks and brains to spare, she hides her light under a bushel, spending most of her time in the darkness of her mind with little more than sarcasm and self-pity to keep her company.

But things are about to change for Grace. While delivering food for her family’s bed and breakfast, she turns onto a desolate dirt road and drives straight into her destiny.

It’s on this isolated country lane that the damaged girl meets a strangely familiar old couple and two mysterious young men. Together the group fights the demons that surround Grace, and they teach her what it means to let her light shine.

“Illuminating Gracie” is, at once, a metaphorical tale of the fight between good and evil and a spiritual saga of one girl’s journey from darkness into the light. If you liked “Twilight” and “The Hunger Games,” you will love the story of Gracie.

ARC Review: Water by Heather James

Elements of Power #2
Author: Heather James
Publication Date: October 19, 2013
Publisher: Self Published

Water pooled around my feet, rising at an alarming rate. I stared - panicked - at the palms of my hands, willing the water gushing out of them to stop as miraculously as it had begun.

I only sneezed!

Jasmine is struggling to control her new powers, causing floods and fires with an accidental flick of her wrist. In a desperate attempt to master at least one aspect of them, she travels to the Brizan Realm, where she comes closer to discovering the truth about her parents than ever before. But not everyone wants their secrets revealed.
Alone, powerless and, for the first time in her life, afraid, Roxy has only one thought occupying her mind: escaping Cinaer's clutches before it's too late. Her flight will take her across the ocean, but not in the direction she is expecting. Before she can try and get back to Brae, she needs to rescue herself.
Despite being on opposite sides of the world, the girls soon find themselves closer than ever.

Disclaimer: Review copy provided by author for review

Let me just say a very unfortunate thing: the Elements of Power is unfortunately one of those many – and I really do mean many series that don't make the very greatest impression in my mind.
But of course, Water has a pretty cover and it has its good moments as well. And it was definitely better than its prequel, Fire.
  • We get a view of the other realms (Brizan and Sephan) as well, aside from the Helian (the majority of where Fire took place) and Arcan realms. :D
  • We also get a view on Brizan powers, along with Jasmine's – well, Jasmine's definitely made some changes/maturity here, along with Brae.
  • O_o I did not get a jaw-dropping surprise about ¾ of the way through. But I did.

Review: Interlude by Sarah Godfrey + Victoria DeRubeis

The Marionettes of Myth Saga #2.5
Author: Sarah Godfrey, Victoria DeRubeis
Released Date: October 2013
Publisher: Self Published

In this thrilling novella set after the events of “Fracture the Spider’s Web”, darker things lurk outside the city.

Before Ave and Elliot met the three siblings in a series of events that would change everything, they operated a superhuman detective business. Finally, with the first break they’ve had since the train wreck began, Ave and Elliot have a chance to take on new cases, and someone wants to join them.

The newest mission tells of strange grinding noises and disappearing machine parts during the dark October nights of the sparsely populated oil country in rural Pennsylvania. A promise of good fun. But, as Yuuhi says, there has never been a case that has gone as expected, and there’s never been a case that has ended well.

Set a month after the collapse of the overpasses, “Interlude” shows the unwinding of events through the eyes of other characters and boasts the usual quirks and laughs of the cast – plus a twist of horror.

Disclaimer: Review copy provided by the authors for review

I was originally planning to read Interlude over Thanksgiving Break. Then I changed my mind and essentially decided to read it while waiting to find out another lovely required reads assignment, which literally drowned me in a pile of book trouble last week. e_e
(I managed to finish Interlude during Advisory. It lightened my load a bit. Though I prefer carrying thousands of virtual books over 3 heavy ones all day around school. :p)

Review: Senshi by Cole Gibsen

Katana #2
Author: Cole Gibsen
Released Date: March 8, 2013
Publisher: Flux

Is Rileigh’s only hope for salvation to team up with her sworn enemy?

Rileigh Martin just wants to do normal teenage things, like go on romantic dates with Kim, her boyfriend and past life soul mate. Although that seems impossible when she’s the reincarnation of Senshi, a fifteenth century samurai warrior. After a ninja ambush leaves her unable to control her ki powers, Rileigh vows to get them under control before her friends lose more than their eyebrows. But when Kim leaves her for his past life betrothed and the other samurai stop talking to her, Rileigh realizes she doesn’t have any friends left to worry about.

As the ninja attacks increase, Rileigh learns that the reincarnated kunoichi, a powerful female ninja, wants to kill her in order to reclaim her destructive powers. Alone and with increasingly unstable powers, Rileigh’s only offer of help comes from Whitley, her sworn past life enemy. Rileigh knows she doesn’t stand a chance against the kunoichi by herself, but Whitley’s sudden allegiance might be hiding a much deadlier agenda.

Well, I'll admit Katana felt like a stand alone – with the "oh, hey, they lived happily ever after! There's no more!" And I actually did think Katana was a stand alone.
But then Goodreads spoiled everything. -_- I can't believe you would do that to me, Goodreads.
Well, not exactly. I really wouldn't have known Katana had a sequel without Goodreads, but with the announcements every single day (Katana was a book club read in October) at school about preordering Senshi, I'm bound to know eventually.
Or the county library would have said, "hey, there's a sequel!" right after I returned Katana in Ebooks Library Lend101. Go figure.
     Moving on.

The Sunday Post ~ 27

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer - It's a chance to share news - A post to recap the past week on your blog, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead.
The worst thing is when you never realized the library bought another copy of The Iron Traitor and that you're second on the hold list and then you have well... a few books added on top of it.
Oh, gods, I'm reading 6+ books. That was not what I was planning. What the monkeys did I do?!?!?!
     *facepalm*
Of course, I'm not mad about it.
So basically I had to rush through a novella (it was a review request), try and finish the review by Wednesday – okay, I was able to adjust so I didn't have to go through that much of a rush, and schedule the post at the last remaining earliest date I can make it, lest I want to make the authors wait for a month or do a double post.
     Joy.

Bookwyrming Thoughts Turns One! (Plus Giveaway)

There is no manual on what to say in a blogoversary post. My thoughts at first?
Well, that kind of stinks. I guess I'll have to tread through the waters and go from there in the hopes I don't fail miserably in the process (I probably will).
