See You Guys... Another Year!

Well, Happy New Year's Eve. It's the end. Literally the END.

Prepare for the zombie apocalypse.

Okay, not exactly. This is the last post of the year, and all I have to say is...

SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!
No really.
I'm taking a trip to the Caribbean.
And I'm not going to return until sometime in 2014 2015.
Also kidding. Have a great rest of 2013. Or maybe Happy New Year if you're already January 1, 2014.
Note: Raw Ratings for books reviewed in 2013 have been officially removed from my hard drive and it's too late to send in an inquiry if you want to know...
But hey, have a great new 2014. Don't let the nargles bite. ;)

The Sunday Post ~ 35

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer - It's a chance to share news - A post to recap the past week on your blog, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead.
I said last week that I might not post this Sunday. Interesting that I still decide to post on Sunday. o_o
I'm apparently behind on my reading schedule again. >_< I guess I'll catch up in the future... when I come across a page-turner book that I read in 2-3 days. O_o (And yes, I sort of do have a reason for that... sort of.)
I tried to look under some trees for a Will Herondale (certainly not a Jace Wayland – he hasn't won me over yet), to no avail. How disappointing.
But did anyone get a hippo?

2014 TBR Pile Challenge!

The 2014 TBR Pile Challenge is hosted by Adam @ Roof Beam Reader.

I hate saying this, but I pretty much failed miserably near the end of the 2013 TBR Pile Challenge. I'll admit the books were randomly chosen... as in really random.

And then I hardly update it (sort of lazy). I actually finished 8 books. Actually, I did update it... sort of. Despite the fact it was bookmarked. I think I need an alarm... or Windows Calendar (you're finally useful aside from being a reading and blog post schedule). -_-

I guess that means I have a minor New Year's Resolution.

My Picks for 2014:
  1. Lichgates by S.M. Boyce *completed 1/26*
  2. The Moon Dwellers by David Estes *completed 2/2*
  3. Prison Nation by Jenni Merritt *completed 5/13*
  4. Lark by Erica Cope *completed 10/22*
  5. Six Moon Summer by S.M. Reine *completed 3/23*
  6. City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare *completed 5/17*
  7. Onyx by Jennifer L. Armentrout *completed 3/15*
  8. Reached by Ally Condie *completed 6/27*
  9. The Void of Mist and Thunder by James Dashner *completed 4/11*
  10. Whispers at Moonrise by C.C. Hunter *completed 11/26*
  11. The Conduit by Stacey Rourke *completed 3/27*
  12. Seeds of Discovery by Breena Puttroff *completed 6/24*
Alternatives
  1. Opal by Jennifer L. Armentrout (hmm... can 2 books by the same author be in the list? It wasn't mentioned... O_o) - Update: I would read this, but after Onyx, I've pretty much given up on the series.
  2. Au Revoir, Crazy European Chick by Joe Schreiber *completed 3/22*
Well, 2nd time's the charm, right? If not, then 3rd....

Hopefully I'll have better luck this year than I did last year. Oh but I AM reading Delirium right now... thanks to Book Club. I think that somehow counts as a tardy.

I honestly thought I wouldn't be posting anymore. Oh wells! :p

Random Thought: The list of books above will most likely appear in the What Should I Read Next? feature... if they haven't appeared already (or if they were 2nd place, they'll appear again if I don't make it to them).

Review: Allegiant by Veronica Roth

Divergent #3
Author: Veronica Roth
Released Date: October 22, 2013
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books

One choice will define you.

What if your whole world was a lie?
What if a single revelation—like a single choice—changed everything?
What if love and loyalty made you do things you never expected?

The faction-based society that Tris Prior once believed in is shattered—fractured by violence and power struggles and scarred by loss and betrayal. So when offered a chance to explore the world past the limits she’s known, Tris is ready. Perhaps beyond the fence, she and Tobias will find a simple new life together, free from complicated lies, tangled loyalties, and painful memories.

But Tris’s new reality is even more alarming than the one she left behind. Old discoveries are quickly rendered meaningless. Explosive new truths change the hearts of those she loves. And once again, Tris must battle to comprehend the complexities of human nature—and of herself—while facing impossible choices about courage, allegiance, sacrifice, and love.

Told from a riveting dual perspective, Allegiant, by #1 New York Times best-selling author Veronica Roth, brings the Divergent series to a powerful conclusion while revealing the secrets of the dystopian world that has captivated millions of readers in Divergent and Insurgent.

Before Reading:
I've been spoiled of the ending. Yep. SPOILED. Then I confirmed it at Barnes & Noble by finding out what chapter it happens on... which I won't say at all.
That should have stopped me from even picking up the last copy from the school library, or even asking, because I simply don't want to get smacked in the face by what happens in the end and how it truly leads there.
But I decided that I should simply take a chance on the series, because after all, I liked the other books in the series. It would be a different case if I didn't like Divergent and Insurgent.
And maybe I'll have different thoughts despite the ending when I do finish reading.

Waiting on Wednesday: The Murder Complex

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine that highlights upcoming book releases that we're eagerly waiting for. :)
Merry Christmas! Hope everyone receives everything they want this year for Christmas! :)

This week's Waiting On Wednesday is The Murder Complex by Lindsay Cummings, coming out on June 10, 2014 from Greenwillow Books
The Murder Complex by Lindsay Cummings
The cover is bloody good. I think that was a pun? I'm not sure. Puns and I never got along. Now Irony and me.... *grins*
Synopsis:
An action-packed, blood-soaked, futuristic debut thriller set in a world where the murder rate is higher than the birthrate. For fans of Moira Young’s Dust Lands series, La Femme Nikita, and the movie Hanna.

Meadow Woodson, a fifteen-year-old girl who has been trained by her father to fight, to kill, and to survive in any situation, lives with her family on a houseboat in Florida. The state is controlled by The Murder Complex, an organization that tracks the population with precision.

The plot starts to thicken when Meadow meets Zephyr James, who is—although he doesn’t know it—one of the MC’s programmed assassins. Is their meeting a coincidence? Destiny? Or part of a terrifying strategy? And will Zephyr keep Meadow from discovering the haunting truth about her family?

Action-packed, blood-soaked, and chilling, this is a dark and compelling debut novel by Lindsay Cummings.

I must have been calendar deprived and forgot about Christmas (Person: How dare you) when I chose The Murder Complex. Blood and murder isn't exactly the greatest pick for a cheery Christmas, lol. *sigh* Oops.

So, what's your pick for this week? I'll bet that it's actually more cheerful than this one, but regardless, I think I might really enjoy The Murder Complex when it comes out. Maybe it'll even land into one of my favorites... since it sounds like my type of book (hey, I like Nikita. And action). :3

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer - It's a chance to share news - A post to recap the past week on your blog, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead.
3 days before Christmas! Not counting today.
Apparently that's all I have to say... aside from wishing you guys a Merry Christmas, and if you only visit on Sundays... see you guys next year! There aren't any posts next week (aside from a New Year's Eve one), so I don't really see any sense in making a Sunday Post... I think I'll go consider it a one week mini blogging break. *sits back and chillaxes* You see... I'll be snuggling under the covers for the next week and enjoying my long break... because it's a once in a lifetime opportunity to get over 2 weeks off (THANK YOU CALENDAR GODS!). ;)

Excerpt + Giveaway: Thimble Down by Pete Prown

     Hey guys!

     Merry –
Oh wait. It's not exactly Christmas. But whatever. Merry Early Christmas – if that phrase actually exists – and Happy Saturday! Author Pete Prown is dropping by the blog today with an excerpt (and a giveaway!) from the first book in his Chronicles of Dorro mystery series (it's YA), Thimble Down.

Title: Thimble Down (Chronicles of Dorro #1)
Author: Pete Prown

Thimble Down, by Pete Prown, is a fantasy adventure novel, written to challenge and engage young adults ages 10 to 18. The book is recommended for readers who enjoy The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, The Wind in the Willows, Redwall, Artemis Fowl, and other timeless tales set in landscapes and cultures that bring to mind England, Ireland, Scotland, and the British Isles.

Thimble Down is a country village where death and malice lurk the quiet lanes. When the vile, drunken Bing Rumple acquires a gem-laden treasure, violence begins to follow him everywhere. Where did Bing find such a precious jewel, and worse, is someone willing to kill to possess it? In this fast-paced adventure, the village bookmaster, Mr. Dorro, and his young companions Wyll Underfoot and Cheeryup Tunbridge are in a desperate race to find the answer—before death comes to Thimble Down.

Thimble Down is the first book in the “Chronicles of Dorro” young adult mystery series, which follows Dorro, Wyll, and Cheeryup, on their exciting, but dangerous, mystery adventures.

I'll admit first and foremost that just because I had to swap review dates with The Iron Traitor a few weeks ago, does not mean that I wanted to toss Destiny Gift right out the window and into the ocean. I almost lost part of my notes with the assumption that my Kindle was broken while in perfect condition when it really just needed charging.
Marking in ebooks is the only way not to get in severe trouble. x) I pity my poor planner with the chickenly scribbles of doom.

The Sunday Post ~ 33

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer - It's a chance to share news - A post to recap the past week on your blog, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead.
Wow. It's been a FREEZING week. I think I spent most of my time hiding under my blanket, even though I did have to crawl out to go to school...
And speaking of school, finals officially start this week. >_<
The only thing that's great about this is the very fact there's 2 weeks of break (and Christmas!).
Oh, and we got a snow day last Friday. Hoorah. Nature has done me a favor by making my review pile go by quicker. By 2 days.
     Well, that's better than nothing.
There is this funny thing about snow. We all get excited when we hear snow is coming and get jumpy when it arrives, but then we're groaning within a few hours.
     Hmm...
So how are you guys this week? I hope it wasn't as freezing as mine was! Oh... and we're getting snow again. Pfft. I know I'm done with snow now.

She has a secret and her whole life revolves around keeping it. Every few months and with little warning, she simply disappears, pulled into the past for hours or even days. She’s terrified it will happen in front of someone, changing her life forever. So far, the only witnesses have been her parents, and that didn’t end well. She has no control over it and no idea why it happens to her.

She wants answers.

He has answers—at least he understands what’s going on. He has a secret, too. He’s part of an organization that goes back in time to rewrite reality. But he also has a problem. He broke the organization’s number-one rule by altering his own timeline. As punishment, he’s been blocked from time travel, which is most unfortunate. Because the changes he made to his timeline, accidentally resulted in disaster for his family. A disaster he’s now prevented from repairing. No one can travel beneath the organization’s radar except a Shadow. But they’re rare, so rare he’s never even met one.

Then he moves to her town.

Review: Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare

The Infernal Devices #3
Author: Cassandra Clare
Released Date: March 19, 2013
Publisher: Margaret K. McElderry Books

The Infernal Devices will never stop coming.

Tessa Gray should be happy – aren't all brides happy? Yet as she prepares for her wedding, a net shadows begins to tighten around the London Institute. A new demon appears, one linked to Mortmain, the man who plans to use his army of pitiless automatons, the Infernal Devices, to destroy the Shadowhunters. And he needs only one last item to complete his plan: Tessa.

The Shadowhunters are desperate to find Mortmain before he strikes. And Jem and Will, the boys who lay equal claim to Tessa's heart, will do anything to save her. For though Tessa and Jem are now engaged, Will is as much in love with her as ever. But their small group cannot stand alone, and the powerful Consul doubts Mortmain's advance. The Shadowhunters find themselves trapped when Mortmain seizes the medicine that keeps Jem alive; now it is up to Will to risk everything to save the girl he and Jem both love. But Tessa is discovering her own powerful true nature. Can a lone girl, even one who can command the power of angels, face down an entire army?

The Shadowhunters are pushed to the very brink of destruction in the breathtaking conclusion to the Infernal Devices trilogy.

Yippee! I'm done with a series! (without abandoning it) And let me just say it was an emotional roller coaster ride to read the finale to The Infernal Devices. Even worse that could have happened? Me reading both Clockwork Princess and Allegiant at the same time because in my humble opinion, it is a bad combo. A very bad combo unless you want to waste boxes of tissues (and I mean more than one).
Actually, any last book plus last book isn't always a great idea... I think you know what I mean. All the emotional and tears (happy, sad, etc...) that may happen.

Review: Darkness Watching by Emma L. Adams

Darkworld #1
Author: Emma L. Adams
Released Date: October 10, 2013
Publisher: Curiosity Quills Press

Eighteen-year-old Ashlyn is one interview away from her future when she first sees the demons. She thinks she's losing her mind, but the truth is far more frightening: she can see into the Darkworld, the home of spirits– and the darkness is staring back.

Desperate to escape the demons, Ash accepts a place at a university in the small town of Blackstone, in the middle of nowhere - little knowing that it isn't coincidence that led her there but the pull of the Venantium, the sorcerers who maintain the barrier keeping demons from crossing from the Darkworld into our own world.

All-night parties, new friendships and a life without rules or limits are all part of the package of student life - but demons still stalk Ash, and their interest in her has attracted the attention of every sorcerer in the area. Ash is soon caught between her new life and a group of other students with a connection to the Darkworld, who could offer the answers she's looking for. The demons want something from her, and someone is determined to kill her before she can find out what it is.

In a world where darkness lurks beneath the surface, not everyone is what they appear to be...

Okay, wow. I'm so behind with writing reviews, I kind of slacked off a little... along with other factors (the not so controllable factors).
On the bright side, I actually did catch up with my reading schedule during Thanksgiving Break. Like I said, best thing ever invented. The inventor deserves a hug.
Back to talking about Darkness Watching. It's a very interesting and unique concept with demons and sorcerers/magic-users (it could be witches. Most common name used throughout the book are those two, so feel free to correct me) in a school setting – well, particularly a college setting. It's making me a bit curious about how the British school system works. Well, I'm a tad bit confused on that... the dictionary wasn't – and isn't – entirely friendly. I might understand the book better then.
*brushes off and doesn't even count since it's a random, erudite-ish thought of mine...*

Arrogant and hot-headed, Lor is everything Ashe wasn’t. But Lor is connected to her soul-mate’s past, and Faye needs him to find the killer—even if Lor is potentially deadly.

But when Faye discovers that Ashe’s past isn’t as black and white as she thought, she faces an impossible choice: Give up the hunt, and risk the lives of others. Or continue pursuing Ashe’s murderer, and forfeit the lives of everyone in her family—including herself.

Title: Rivals & Renegades (The Hurley Vance Series #2)
Author: J.D. Nock
Link: Goodreads
Publication Date: March 2014

Hurley Vance. It is a name spray painted on alley walls, and spoken in careful whispers. But to Lessers, it’s more than a name.
As a deranged Financial Minister and an arrogant President grapple for control over an obedient population, a violated Lesser underclass can only wait and see which dictator triumphs. 22-year-old Hurley Vance embarks on a plan to manipulate the warring Equals and liberate Evangeline Street, an imprisoned rebel leader idolized by her followers. Alongside a brutally rough friend named Sig Jaxson, Hurley leads a troublesome band of Lesser renegades. They are out to stoke a revolution, and defend a group of people who have been abused for far too long.
But the oppressors are everywhere. Roaming Watchers prowl the streets. District Speakers champion thoughts of forced equality. Filtering Houses cleanse literature, and Alteration Clinics punish the different. Unfortunately for Equal statesmen and their worshipping legions, Hurley Vance is determined to end their reign.

ARC Review: These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman + Meagan Spooner

Starbound #1
Author: Amie Kaufman, Meagan Spooner
Publication Date: December 10, 2013
Publisher: Disney Hyperion

It's a night like any other on board the Icarus. Then, catastrophe strikes: the massive luxury spaceliner is yanked out of hyperspace and plummets into the nearest planet. Lilac LaRoux and Tarver Merendsen survive. And they seem to be alone.

Lilac is the daughter of the richest man in the universe. Tarver comes from nothing, a young war hero who learned long ago that girls like Lilac are more trouble than they’re worth. But with only each other to rely on, Lilac and Tarver must work together, making a tortuous journey across the eerie, deserted terrain to seek help.

Then, against all odds, Lilac and Tarver find a strange blessing in the tragedy that has thrown them into each other’s arms. Without the hope of a future together in their own world, they begin to wonder—would they be better off staying here forever?

Everything changes when they uncover the truth behind the chilling whispers that haunt their every step. Lilac and Tarver may find a way off this planet. But they won’t be the same people who landed on it.

The first in a sweeping science fiction trilogy, These Broken Stars is a timeless love story about hope and survival in the face of unthinkable odds.
Disclaimer: Review copy provided by Disney Hyperion via Netgalley for review (thanks!)

These Broken Stars follows two very different people, Lilac and Tarver, from a futuristic galaxy as they try to survive in the wilderness of an unknown planet after a ship crash in space.
I really love the way how These Broken Stars is set up and formatted. I didn't exactly understand it at first, but the beginning of each chapter is in the present (in terms of the book's timeline – not 2013), giving a very brief synopsis in a sort-of interview/interrogation style with Tarver. Then the chapter gives an elaboration, telling the story behind the interview/interrogation in Lilac's and Tarver's point of views. It sort of reminds me of If I Stay with its many flashbacks, but not as depressing (thankfully).

Blog Tour: The Key - Interview + Giveaway

Title: The Key (True Reign #1)
Author: Jennifer Anne Davis
Publication Date: November 15, 2013
Publisher: Clean Teen Publishing

Within these pages lie kingdoms with castles and princes who fall in love with fair maidens, but make no mistake−this is no fairytale.

His father’s kingdom is on the brink of upheaval and at the center of it all is an ordinary girl who could be the key to its undoing. When faced with the ultimate choice, will he choose the girl he’s falling in love with or the kingdom he has sworn to protect?

An ordinary girl with an extraordinary past. All she wants is to be free. What she doesn’t realize is that freedom comes with a price she can’t afford to pay. She’s forced to accept the proposal of a prince she despises, even though her heart belongs to someone else . . . his brother.

Seventeen-year-old Rema lives in a brutal kingdom where travel between regions is forbidden, people are starving, and looking at someone the wrong way can mean death. Nineteen-year-old Darmik is the king’s son and Commander of the King’s Army. He spends his days roving the island, doing his father’s bidding and trying to maintain control over the people.

When a chance encounter throws Rema and Darmik together, they share an instantaneous connection, but any sort of relationship between them is strictly forbidden. Darmik’s brother, the Crown Prince, notices Darmik’s interest in Rema and, in a calculated, political move, blackmails her. Faced with an impossible choice, Rema is forced to sacrifice her heart in order to save her family.

As Rema is taken to the palace with the Crown Prince, Darmik confronts the growing rumor that a legitimate blood heir to the throne exists and is trying to overthrow Darmik’s family. In Darmik’s quest to hunt down and kill the threat, he discovers that nothing is as it seems. Locked in the king’s castle, Rema finds herself a key player in a massive power struggle. When Darmik shows up, she’s not sure if she can trust him. The line between friends, enemies, and loyalty becomes blurred. As truths are unlocked, Rema understands that she just might be the key to finding the rightful heir and restoring peace to the kingdom… if she can manage to stay alive long enough.

What Should I Read Next? ~ 1

I just recently finished Allegiant by Veronica Roth (review December 26) and Darkness Rising by Emma L. Adams (review December 10) and would like you guys to decide what I should read next (aside from review requests that is). I sort of have a few suggestions available, but if you have any other recommendations, feel free to give your thoughts.

The Sunday Post ~ 31

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer - It's a chance to share news - A post to recap the past week on your blog, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead.
My progress on NaNoWriMo this year... none. I doubt journal writing even counts, nor does tweeting, or texting or whatever else involves writing/typing.
Call me weird, but my NaNoWriMo is summer usually. I have plenty of downtime to do writing if I so choose to aside from reading all day or getting dragged out shopping (unless it's to the mall and that mall has a bookstore, no thanks?) or going to the library.
But adios November and hola December, AKA last month of the year. May the elves be ever in your favor. Or bells.
Oh and it snowed yet again.
It hardly made a blip on the radar. How unfortunate. But I did catch up with reading. ^_^
