I promised myself to wait until 1/3 of the book. I know I generally wait until 50%, but that's just the max I'll wait. But for this particular book, I didn't make it. More like ¼ instead. Why? Here's my biggest reason:
It felt like a utopian. A completely perfect world. The characters seemed too perfect. Everyone seemed happy. Caleb and Alexa's relationship blossoming to romance felt totally out of place. It was more of a puppeteer forcing the two together than letting it naturally happen, or maybe it was just the way it was written.
Amulet of Elusion made everything seem so happy and sunshiny, which isn't exactly bad considering the weather this year. The majority of us certainly need some rays of sunshine to remain optimistic about Spring.
Speaking of utopians and making things all happy and sunshiny, it just made everything slowww. And I stress extremely slow that over a few days I fell a little behind on my reading schedule just to avoid the book (I did have to read Knight Assassin eventually. Consider it my excuse, and it's very valid). The prologue did start out great though. But after that? It went down the drain.
The first sentence in chapter one chased all my hopes about the book away. "It was a beautiful day..."
Um, no. No no no no.
