Review: Shade Me by Jennifer Brown (UM?!)

Shade Me (Nikki Kills #1)

Publication Date: January 19th 2016
Publisher: Harper Collins

Nikki Kill does not see the world like everyone else. In her eyes, happiness is pink, sadness is a mixture of brown and green, and lies are gray.

Thanks to a phenomenon called synesthesia, Nikki’s senses overlap, in a way that both comforts and overwhelms her.

Always an outsider, just one D shy of flunking out, Nikki’s life is on the fast track to nowhere until the night a mysterious call lights her phone up bright orange—the color of emergencies.

It’s the local hospital. They need Nikki to identify a Jane Doe who is barely hanging on to life after a horrible attack.

The victim is Peyton Hollis, a popular girl from Nikki’s school who Nikki hardly knows. One thing is clear: Someone wants Peyton dead. But why? And why was Nikki’s cell the only number in Peyton’s phone?

As she tries to decipher the strange kaleidoscope of clues, Nikki finds herself thrust into the dark, glittering world of the ultrarich Hollis family and drawn towards Peyton’s handsome, ne’er-do-well older brother, Dru.

While Nikki’s colors seem to help her unravel the puzzle, what she can’t see is that she may be falling into a trap. The only truth she can be sure of is that death is a deep, pulsing crimson.

This was such a rollarcoaster ride for me and to be honest...I still don't know what I really think about SHADE ME. It had a really interesting storyline buuuuuut the follow through was kind of terrible. Actually scrap kind of, it was terrible. And I was really disappointed. REALLY disappointed! I've never read a book about Synesthesia, let alone really heard about it so I was expecting to learn more about it. Which we kinda did...but everything else kinda took over and those things frustrated me and made me lose interest in the story.

The AMOUNT OF QUESTIONS I HAD WHEN I GOT TO THE LAST PAGE OMGGGGG. *grinds teeth* Literally, NONE of my questions were answered by the end of the book, and they were BIG questions, massive questions that I STILL desperately want answers too! And yes, I know this is going to be a series and maybe the answers I want will be in later books...but I felt my questions are regarding this book and the fact they wernt answered made me feel like I'd been promised something and then that something had been snatched out of my grasp at the very last second. -_-

The romance...I literally don't even know how to spout my confusion at it! AGAIN, I have so many questions!! THAT WERNT ANSWERED!! If you've read Shade Me and are also feeling confused, TELL ME! I really need to dump my thoughts on someone because I am SO. CONFUSSSSSED.

BUT! It was addicting!
From 40% through to the end I could. not. tear myself. away! I was trying to read it every free moment I got and so maybe that's why I felt so let down by the ending.

Even though I wished the Synesthesia parts hadn't been so overshadowed by other boring parts, I still LOVED reading about it! It was so interesting as I've never really heard about it before so it was eyeopening as well as making the story more different and exciting. If I read the second book in the series, it will only be because I was such a fan of the Synesthesia aspect.

I suppose I enjoyed it somewhat. I mean it's taken me a few weeks of grinding my teeth and groaning every time I think of it, but I was addicted and and enjoying some parts a lot! (Just a lot of other parts were terrible.)

Basically I am confused, angry and unhappy...but also would quite like the second book LIKE NOW just so I could see if my questions were answered!! DOES ANYONE HAVE A TIME MACHINE?!
